NAD+ IV infusions have become one of the most talked-about treatments in the rapidly growing longevity industry.
Wellness and anti-ageing clinics promote these infusions as a way to increase energy, improve mental clarity, repair cells, support recovery and slow the ageing process. Celebrity promotion and impressive scientific language have added to their appeal.
However, the popularity of a treatment does not necessarily mean its benefits have been proven—or that it is free from risk.
A recent tragedy in New York has brought these concerns into sharp focus.
What reportedly happened?
In July, 27-year-old Elizabeth Baron attended a holistic wellness centre in the Bronx for an intravenous NAD+ infusion.
According to prosecutors, she suffered cardiac arrest shortly after the infusion began. She was rushed to hospital but sadly could not be saved.
The person who reportedly administered the infusion claimed to have a medical qualification from the Dominican Republic. However, he was not licensed to practise medicine in New York or anywhere else in the United States.
He was subsequently charged with unauthorised practice of a profession and reckless endangerment.
There is an important medical and legal distinction to make: Elizabeth Baron’s official cause of death had not been established when the case was reported. Toxicology results were still pending.
Therefore, it would be inaccurate to state that NAD+ caused her death.
What can responsibly be said is that an invasive medical procedure was reportedly carried out by an unlicensed practitioner, and a young woman suffered a fatal cardiac arrest shortly after the infusion began.
What is NAD+?
NAD+, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is a naturally occurring coenzyme found in every living cell.
It plays an important role in cellular energy production, metabolism and DNA repair. NAD+ levels may decline with age, which has made it an important subject in longevity and ageing research.
However, the fact that NAD+ occurs naturally in the body does not automatically mean that delivering it intravenously is safe, necessary or clinically proven to provide the benefits being advertised.
There is legitimate scientific interest in NAD+ and in oral precursors that may help the body produce it. Yet strong human clinical evidence supporting intravenous NAD+ for anti-ageing, chronic fatigue, addiction recovery or cognitive improvement remains limited.
A promising biological theory is not the same as a proven medical treatment.
Why an IV must be treated seriously
Words such as “natural,” “holistic,” “wellness” and “anti-ageing” can make a procedure feel reassuring and harmless.
But an IV infusion is still an invasive medical procedure.
When we swallow a substance, it passes through the digestive system and liver, where it is processed before entering the wider circulation.
An IV bypasses many of these natural protective processes and delivers a substance directly into the bloodstream.
Potential complications may include:
- Allergic or unexpected reactions
- Infection
- Incorrect dosage or infusion speed
- Contamination
- Medication interactions
- Changes in blood pressure or heart rhythm
- Fluid or electrolyte imbalances
- Delayed emergency treatment
This does not mean that every IV treatment is dangerous. It means that IV treatments require proper medical assessment, qualified practitioners, sterile procedures and clearly established emergency protocols.
Your medications and medical history matter
Before receiving any infusion, an appropriately qualified medical professional should review your health conditions, allergies, medications and previous reactions.
Even substances marketed as vitamins or naturally occurring compounds can affect the body or interact with prescription medications.
A responsible provider should clearly explain:
- What substance is being administered
- Why the treatment is being recommended
- The dosage and expected duration
- The strength of the available evidence
- Known and possible side effects
- Possible medication interactions
- Alternative treatment options
- Who will administer the infusion
- What will happen if an emergency occurs
If reasonable safety questions are dismissed—or answered only with testimonials and marketing claims—that should be treated as a serious warning sign.
Five things to check before receiving an NAD+ IV infusion
1. The practitioner
Confirm that the person prescribing and administering the infusion holds the appropriate professional registration and is legally authorised to perform the procedure.

2. The facility
Ask whether the facility is appropriately authorised, insured and equipped to provide intravenous treatments.
A luxurious room, polished website or large social-media following does not establish medical competence.
3. The product
Ask exactly what is being infused, where it was manufactured and whether it came from an authorised and traceable source.
You should also be told the dosage and provided with clear information about the possible risks.
4. The emergency response
Confirm that appropriately trained staff, monitoring equipment and emergency procedures are available if a serious reaction occurs.
When a substance is delivered directly into the bloodstream, every minute may matter.
5. The clinical evidence
Ask one simple but important question:
“What reliable human clinical evidence supports this treatment for the benefit being promised?”
A trustworthy practitioner should be comfortable explaining whether the evidence is strong, limited, emerging or absent.
Be cautious of extraordinary longevity claims
Some businesses use scientific terminology to make experimental or weakly supported treatments sound established.
Be particularly cautious when a single infusion is claimed to:
- Reverse ageing
- Repair the entire body at a cellular level
- Detoxify the system
- Cure chronic fatigue
- Restore brain function rapidly
- Replace healthy lifestyle practices
The more extraordinary the promise, the more carefully the scientific evidence and practitioner’s credentials should be examined.
Celebrity endorsements, testimonials and scientific-sounding explanations are not substitutes for properly conducted human clinical trials.
The foundations of longevity remain simple
The most reliable ways to support long-term health are rarely glamorous.
They include regular movement, maintaining muscle strength, restorative sleep, balanced nutrition, healthy blood pressure and blood sugar, meaningful relationships, emotional regulation and appropriate medical care.
Supporting the nervous system also matters. Chronic stress can influence sleep, muscle tension, digestion, behaviour and the daily choices that shape our health.
Gentle nervous-system regulation practices may help create the internal conditions needed to maintain healthier habits and support overall wellbeing.
These foundations may not offer the excitement of a fashionable infusion, but they have significantly more evidence behind them.
The real lesson behind this tragedy
This case should not be used to claim that every NAD+ infusion is dangerous or that NAD+ caused this young woman’s death before the medical investigation is complete.
The deeper issue is accountability.
No longevity trend should outrun medical licensing, transparent evidence and proper safety procedures. A treatment does not become safe simply because it is natural, expensive, popular or promoted by celebrities.
Before allowing any substance to be delivered directly into your bloodstream, pause and verify the practitioner, the facility, the product, the emergency safeguards and the evidence.
Your bloodstream should never become a testing ground for someone else’s marketing promise.
